I've gotten to a point with my JRT where I can have him off leash constantly, walk, sniff and explore freely. I allow this because I want him to have the best and most fulfilling life.
This is because he is still fully obedient and listens to me whenever I need him to come back to me, leave something be, stay, heel, keep pace, etc. If he does not listen, he will get corrected. This is crucial. Otherwise leadership is gradually lost over time.
Question. When and how do you let your dog pee and poo if you don't allow them to stop? Also, if sniffing helps tire them out more than walking, wouldn't it be beneficial for everyone to let them stop and sniff? I'm just trying to understand how to be a leader but also let my dog be a dog. Love your videos! Please help
Hi, my dog is super anxious. She’s very sensitive to noises and We shifted cities a year ago. The new city is far more noisier than the earlier one – our dog just refuses to come out for a walk. If somehow she does come down the apartment building she keeps pulling to come back inside. She’s a rescue that has been with us since she was 2 months old – not food motivated at all. Any tips?
I used to let my dog stop when she wanted, it was her walk so it's up to her I thought. But my dog was incredibly soft natured so I never had any issues with behaviour problems.
This may be true for the majority of dogs. However, I have a highly anxious dog who would frequently get overwhelmed on walks and just stop walking. No amount of patience, treats, reassurance, or anything would get her to start moving again. There were multiple occasions I had to pick her up and carry her home. Now that we have switched to dog-led walks, meaning she gets to choose where we go (within reason) and when we stop, we almost never have issues with her freezing up m.

Good advise!
While you're on the lead, that dog follows you. When not on the lead, you follow the dog.
Not fair on a dog to not be offlead trained. Their walks aren't about you. It's about them.
Allow the poor guys to stretch their legs, sniff, investigate and just be dogs.
