What treats do you recommend for the reward? What length of leash do you recommend for outside walks?

I think he has great info, great trainer, he shoots himself in the foot every time he cusses like a sailor, not necessary and diminishes professionalism greatly

I’ve been watching hundreds of dog training videos on YouTube, I think this kid’s videos are the best. Love the way he breaks everything down then goes out and shows you.

I know this as "generalization", i.e. dogs learn in connection with a specific environment. So learning something in one environment doesn't mean they can do it in a different environment or setting. So one would proceed as you described – continue with another setting, increase the radius etc. The more environments you've covered, the more likely it is that the dog will transfer its behaviour to a totally new environment. That's the "generalization" or transfer.

Wouldn’t teaching focus in distracting environments first be easier ?

After he does his job. Do you let him play with the toy? Or only reward with treats enforcement and end the session?

When a dog goes into the environment and is reacting to any type of environmental stimulus, it makes no sense trying to give them a stationary command like sit or down. It goes against a dog's natural instinct . You are creating more stress and frustration. You are going against on what a dog's natural instinct is when they see something that makes them aroused, stressed , etc. The dog muscles tense and the body is flooded with neurotransmitters to keep them alert. In nature if this didn't happen that dog would not survive Making the dog do a stationary obedience command is not something you should be promoting. Instead you should be using movement , engagement and some sort of outlet (detection or sniffing) while in the environment and gradually add triggers or distractions. I agree with you taking a step back and starting in a low distracting environment but I don't agree trying to build resilience with obedience commands, especially when dealing with a dogs genetics or instinct

now that i watch the video, i realised that although my pup was fine out in the fields, with great recall, I had never before trained him outside on a windy or rainy day. The past days I started taking him to the fields while raining, and he behaves like Im invisible. Can the weather affect the training?? I think it can, a rainy windy day has totally different scents and different distractions for the dictator-nose of a beagle.

my beagle was quite fine in moderate distractions, suddenly he has switched off, like he has no ears no eyes, I am invisible. He is 10 months old, I am really desperate.

We did everything well and everything was perfect. But then puberty kicked in. 😂 Literally all was gone. We're still in puberty and I'm being consistent with going back down the ladder to the very bottom on almost every single walk. But it's frustrating atm. I'm confident that my Thorssàl and me will be good once he is adult. Yet I have to remind myself all the time that this is just a phase of natural development.
As I've always owned Rottweilers and American Bulldogs, I know that their brain goes chaotic for a long time before becoming mature. My Australian Cattle Dog did not take that long.
Due to extreme reactive actions on the leash, I'm now getting a dog trainer to watch us and tell me about what I can do better. In Germany, it's hard to get a good dog trainer, who also likes to deal with proper huge dogs. If they don't want to help with Rottweilers, Bulldogs, or Staffs, they probably aren't good dog trainers anyhow. 😮
My current Rottweiler Thorssàl will be trained to become my certified PTSD service dog, just like my last Rottweiler Lodur, who was a gorgeous and loyal service dog. So we still have a long way to go. 😊

These videos of yours are such a great help to understand the theories. Even for me, having so much practice with dogs – I bred AB's for decades and used to train service dogs and socialize bully breed dogs. As I'm now in the position myself to need a service dog, my internal mindset and anxiety outside of home reflect on my personality and can be hard on my dog. We all need to know when to ask for help and we always need to search for answers. 😉

It’s lovely how positive these comments are …. I think this lovely young man will do well also due to his sweet personality ..he isn’t condescending like a lot of well known trainers … plus his approach is calm detailed and motivating … keep that smiling energy flowing young man …. I hope I can utilise your skills to continue to train my bull terrier X ….

Omg. After watching this video, I know why I failed . I got a Belgian Malinos who is absolutely out of control outside. That makes sense , but does that mean I have to start from beginning everything? Do not take him out for walks until I don't pass all the ladders?

My dog is brilliant at this at all times but the moment a dog is in sight he gets so stressed, on guard and reactive he can’t hold his position and remain focussed on me
